Jeopardy Review Game (The last week of Jesus' life), Manual 7, Lesson 29-33

There are five lessons in the Primary New Testament manual that cover the last week of Jesus' life: The Last Supper; The Garden of Gethsemane; The Betrayal, Arrest, and Trial; The Crucifixion; and The Resurrection.  We covered all five lessons using the PowerPoint lessons made my Erika Covalt on Sugardoodle.net.  We also watched a movie from the library about the last week of his life (I can't remember the title, but I think it is something about the last week of Jesus' life).  I have been promising another review game and thought that this would be a perfect way to do it.  Jeopardy has five categories and we had five lessons plus next week is General Conference and the following week is our primary program practice.

Here is a little about the game.  When you start the slide show you need to click a couple times to bring in the Jeopardy sign, music, and the headers.  If you click after (not on a link) it will start going through the questions - you DON'T want to do that.  

Here is how we played:

• Started slide show off of first page
• Click twice (make sure sound is on your laptop).  This will bring up the background for the categories, the word Jeopardy, and play the opening music to the game
• Introduce the categories by clicking them in one at a time and reading them.
• We went down the row (I only had three kids show up, if it would've been the whole class I probably would have paired them up) and they were able to choose their category and amount.  If they got it right I awarded them the money (we kept track on the chalk board), if they were wrong someone else could steal it.  If more than one knew it I had them tell me at the same time and if they both were right they split the money.  When they choose a category and amount just click on the dollar amount under that category.
• To reveal the answer click again.
• To get back to the board click on the picture in the bottom corner (of Alex Trebek).
• The questions that have been chosen will change to yellow.  These shouldn't be chosen again.
• After all the questions were answered I had their money totaled.  They then were able to risk their "money" for the final question.  I gave them a piece of paper to write on.  First they wrote their amount.
• Then I revealed the question and read it to them.  Click once and the Jeopardy music will play. (I downloaded the music from here: http://www.sequinsbyeileen.com/kidsmidi.htm)  Just save it, click on the sound icon on the computer and it will ask if you want to find it.  Click on yes then click on the music you saved.
• After the music ended I made them stop writing (it wasn't enough time.  If I did it again I would wait a little longer before I started the music).
• Then I had them show what they wrote and read their answer.  We either added or subtracted from their remaining money.  I gave everyone a treat.

NOTE: the final question was hard.  I stressed it at the end of the previous lesson, but not one of the three were able to get it right.  If you didn't talk about it I would definitely change the question/answer.

Primary Printable (Manual 7, Lesson 10)

This lesson is The Sermon on the Mount and the Beatitudes.  For enrichment activity one I made these cards: 

The cards have half of each beatitude on them so you can match the up into sets. For class I printed them on card-stock (laminate if possible).  We played memory with them and then I gave a set to each child to play with their family at home.  You can cut them into rectangles or along the lines.

Primary Printable (Manual 7, Lesson 8)

For the activity at the end of lesson (Enrichment Activity 2) it states to get pictures of temples and church buildings and write their names on separate paper and have the children match it.  I made up a matching activity doing just that:

Google docs wouldn't let me upload it as a word file because it was too large.  As a PDF it was grainy.  I tried a new site: 4shared.com.  It takes larger files.  Leave me a comment as to which one you like best.  The trick to this site though is to make sure you hit the blue download button:

The pictures are mainly of temples, but there are a couple meetinghouses thrown in.  The meetinghouses are in our general area and I had the name of them listed, but for the sake of others I just left it as meetinghouse.  It is a word document so if you choose, you can change the picture to reflect the church building you attend and add the name of the building.  If your local temple isn't included you may want to add that as well.  

After I printed them on card-stock I just cut them into rectangles (I would have laminated them, but my laminator was down for the count).  During class I handed out the pictures to the kids first and kept the names.  I went through the names one at a time and if they thought they had the picture that went with it they held it up.  We did this to become familiar with the matches.  Afterwords we put them face down on the ground and played a game of memory with them.

General Conference Kits

It's that time of year again, time to get ready for General Conference.  I decided to not only try to make print off the Internet a packet for my children, but to make a conference kit for my primary class and for the sisters that I visit teach.  I'll share what I did and the links, but sorry I didn't create anything for this so there are no printables.

For my primary class I rearranged our lessons so that the lesson taught the Sunday before General Conference was lesson 9: Jesus Christ Calls His Apostles.  I thought that it would be fitting to learn about Apostles before they had the opportunity to watch them on TV.  For part of that lesson I printed each of my kids these at Costco.  I purchased some photo books at the dollar store.  Now they have a book of the first presidency and the 12 apostles.  They can learn fun facts along with their names and faces.  We didn't get them fully assembled in class so I brought them home and added them to their conference bags.  I actually had planned that they would be a part of their conference bag, but I also I wanted to give them at church on Sunday, but didn't have them ready.  
Their conference kit: First I purchased medium sized gift bags at the dollar store.  Then I printed off some activities for them to do.  Sugardoodle.net has a bunch.  They even have more now then when I started.  I printed pages 10-12 from here and pages 23-25 from here.  I made the plate mobile for them.  I added two individual boxes of cereal, a package of Starburst for the game, and a sucker.  Hopefully it'll bring a little extra fun to watching conference!

The Prophets and Apostles Books

I also saw the idea floating around to make kit for the sisters you visit teach.  I must admit than I haven't been doing this duty as well as I should be lately and I obviously like to make a few things so I decided it would be a great way to let them know I care.  
I printed off age appropriate kits off sugardoodle.  I didn't always use the full kit (I know my kids don't ever color everything in the kits).  Instead of naming everything off I think I'll just show a few pictures.  This family has children of various ages so I'm showing it:

The toilet paper rolls are for an activity found in the Nursery/Jr. Primary packet.  The plate is like what I gave my primary kids.  It is a mobile that has a picture and a few lines to write about the talk of the first presidency and the 12 apostles.  There is a bag of candy for the game in the kits.  A couple candy bars for the sister I visit teach (or if she wants, one for her hubby).  There is one sucker for each person in the family and a couple breakfast/snack type items.  Next conference I think I'm going to throw in lunch items.  The kits I had viewed had breakfast items so that is what I had on my brain at the store.  But then I realized in Virginia conference starts at noon.  Oh well, next time.  The red and black item actually contains a notepad for the sister I visit teach.  

 The bag: you'll notice a few pencils for the kids I forgot in the first picture.  Oh, I also made them the Prophets and Apostles book.  I forgot to put it in here so I need to give it to her next time I see her.

Instructions for these are here.  I slipped a matching pencil in the pocket.  I purchased these file folders in Target's dollar section (pencils too).  They are a little smaller than a normal file folder however.  If I had more time I would have jazzed it up with a ribbon and a label (about it being a Conference Notebook), but I'm lucky just to pull it all together.  They aren't as fancy, but it is a step up from just a yellow notepad!


Now I need to finish a few kits, get them delivered and get things ready for my own kids to do before Saturday!

Primary Review (Manual 7, Lesson 3-7)

To review what we learned and to have a little fun I made a PowerPoint Jeopardy review game.  It turned out to be a little harder than I thought it may be (they actually had to think).  I made it so the harder questions were worth more.  We took turns picking their question by category and dollar amount.  If they couldn't make a guess someone was able to answer it and receive the money, but if they made a guess I showed the answer.  If they got it right we wrote down the dollar amount, if not we went to the next person.  By keeping score so they were able to use their money for final jeopardy.  
Every week we use the PowerPoint presentation that Ericka Covalt makes and shares on Sugardoodle.net.  I pulled all the information off of those PowerPoint presentations so I KNOW that we covered it.  It was a good review.  We were able to start the next lesson, but we didn't finish it.  We were already a week behind (because I started the calling a week late and they didn't give the Sr. Primary lesson the first week so I gave it the 2nd week) so I'm going to find a way to combine a couple lessons here or there so we can continue to have some review games.

Challenges

I started off the year challenging my class.  There are several things I did and I'll try to cover them here:

• First since this year's theme is "I  Know the Scriptures are True" I wanted them to challenge them to read the Book of Mormon.  It is 531 pages long so I gave the them the challenge to read 2 pages a day (if they read two a day it should take them 266 days - lots of extra days in there to make up reading).  This can be done individually or with their families.  I made a tracking sheet for them to keep track of what they have read.  Actually, I modified one I found here.  I just added a line of boxes below it so there would be enough boxes and wrote page numbers in the box - just the even numbers since they are to read 2 a day.  I told them that if they are reading it with their family they can finish were they are and then start it again.  Those who read it by the end of the year will be invited to a Scripture Party.  When I figure out those details I'll be sure to share! 
• I emailed all the parents asking them to be sure to send scriptures every week (they all have their own set) because we will be use them every Sunday.  They also receive a card that has activities on it covering the current week's lesson.  This is their "homework".  Some of the activities we do in class, but there is usually some extra item (i.e. scripture reading, memorize article of faith, etc) to do at home.  If they finish they get a treat/reward.  They attached these cards to their scriptures ~ another reason to bring their scriptures each week.  I laminated the cover sheet and cut a plain cardstock for a backing and laminated that as well.  I also gave them the Article of Faith card to help keep track of what ones they have memorized.  I put an eyelet through it to help make sure it isn't lost.  The rest of the cards we put hole reinforcements on.  Hopefully they will last through the year.
• The scripture party is just for those who read the scriptures, but they have a chance to earn other parties.  I still have to figure out the details, but I'm thinking a point system.  When a certain amount of points are earned we'll have a party.  As I said before when I work out a chart/details I'll be sure to share.
• My other goal is to have them memorize the books of the New Testament.  We sing the song and several have worked on it at home.  One of the cards I talked about above includes an award card for memorizing the books.  I was going to attach a candy bar to it and as they pass them off they will get their award to add to their ring of cards and a treat.  Memorizing the books will help them find the scriptures quickly in class and will prepare them for seminary.

That is the overview of my challenges.  I'm hoping that it isn't too much.  I did find out with my son (and need to share with the other parents) that the homework cards are great for sacrament.  I don't let my two senior primary kids bring extra things to do during church, but there is nothing wrong with reading the scriptures during the sacrament!  If he ends up doing one of the puzzles at least he is learning something on his level (and not driving his sisters crazy).
